.CB YOU ARE MAKING A MISTAKE
If you want peace, a good environment, and good jobs, you
are making a mistake in demonstrating against nuclear energy. Here's
why:
.item←0
#. The energy shortage in the U.S. is serious and will get worse. We
have already used most of our oil, and most of our electricity is
generated from oil.
#. We are now outbidding the poorer countries for the world's remaining
oil.
#. We already have a dangerously low margin of safety in the
availability of power in California. If something breaks down
or if the drought continues, there will be blackouts.
#. California voters turned down a proposal to restrict nuclear
energy by a two-to-one vote in 1976. If demonstrations or lawsuits
by environmentalists frustrate the vote and cause blackouts, the
voters will make all environmental causes suffer,
and you will deserve it.
#. Accumulating experience shows that nuclear energy is the safest
form of electric generation that the world has. 120 plants throughout
the world have had no accidents resulting in fatalities. Coal mining
has killed thousands, but we must continue mining coal.
#. Maybe solar energy will be available some day, but any present
design will at least triple your light bill.

why:

#. The energy shortage in the U.S. is serious and will get worse. We
have already used most of our oil. Most of our electricity is
generated from oil. If you want a chance at a decent job, nuclear energy
is critical.
#. We are now outbidding the poorer countries for the world's remaining
oil. You will be depriving others less fortunate.
#. We already have a dangerously low margin of safety in the
availability of power in California. If something breaks down
or if the drought continues, you will be helping to create blackouts.
#. California voters turned down a proposal to restrict nuclear
energy by a two-to-one vote in 1976. If you use demonstrations or lawsuits
to frustrate the vote and it causes blackouts, the voters will make all
environmental causes suffer.
#.There are 120 nuclear plants worldwide, and none of them have
had any fatal accidents. Coal mining has killed thousands. If you succeed
suppressing nuclear power, you will
deprive us of a source of power that has so far been the world's safest.
#. Maybe inexpensive solar energy will be available some day, but any
present projected design for solar electric power would at least triple
your light bill because of high capital and maintenance costs.

notes:
We are in for a bad time anyway, and you are making it worse.
2. Nuclear energy is too important to leave to the P.R. department
of P.G. & E.
specific issues
1. After 500 years, the radio-activity of nuclear waste is back
to the level of the Uranium ore from which it came. All the proposals
will work.
2. All energy and everything else we do endangers the lives of
innocents. Driving down here to demonstrate might cause an
accident. The safety level of nuclear energy to date is good
evidence supporting the claim that it is the safest form of energy.
